Analytics Development Program Intern

May - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

They have a lot of resources set up to support the interns to help them succeed. As an intern, you are placed on a specific team and expected to do a project or a group of projects which you present on at the end of the internship. I enjoyed having meaningful work that contributed to my team and getting real experience and knowledge in the insurance field.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more communication from my team before the first day, this would have made me more prepared for what my specific team does.

Advice

Try to learn as much as possible and meet with as many people as possible. I was very fortunate in that almost everyone who I asked to have a coffee chat with did and I got to learn a lot about many different parts of the company. Having a range of people that you connect with lets you know if you want to come back to this company and gives you better insight into the culture and career opportunities.

Risk Control Intern

June - August 2019 • Bala Cynwyd, PA

What I liked

Liberty Mutual made great efforts to offer experiences for growth. These included many field experiences and visits. Additionally, all of my coworkers welcomed me and supported me in my efforts. It was easy to ask questions and find someone eager to help.

What I wish was different

While this internship was a great experience, I wish there had been more opportunities to contribute to the company. I gave this feedback and Liberty Mutual seemed very receptive and I am excited to intern with them again.

Advice

Don't go into the risk control intern position thinking of it as a "safety position". The safety background is very useful, but consulting skills are very important as well as identifying risk.

TechStart Intern

May - August 2019 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

Lots of opportunities to connect with senior leadership/other areas of the company. We got all the resources we needed to complete our project. I worked on a team with two other interns and we were essentially a small team. We got the full Agile experience -- retros, demos, Kanban board, daily Scrums, etc. A really great insight into Liberty Mutual's structure and day-to-day routine of a developer. Project had value and was interesting. Got to apply a lot of difference concepts I learned. Throughout the internship, everyone emphasized to us that our project had a lot of meaning and that people would be very happy to use it.

What I wish was different

Kind of hard to understand the industry jargon sometimes. Felt lost in demos sometimes.

Advice

You get out what you put in. Take the initiative to talk to other people and learn more about what they do. You can arrange meetings with almost everyone (within reason). This was a SWE internship but I also talked to a bunch of data scientists who cemented my decision to do a Data Analytics major as well.

What I liked

The pay and learning experience, also the ability to be creative in my work!

What I wish was different

I would have had more hands on sales experience. I did a lot of cold calls, but I didn’t get to sit in on any sales.

Advice

Network, network, network!! That is the best way to make connections to get that job. That’s how I got this internship. Also, once you get the job, keep networking within the company and look for job opportunities and opportunities to grow.

risk engineering

May - August 2018 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

The overall experience, I found an engineering field I previously had no idea existed and found a company that I would be more than happy to work for in the future

What I wish was different

Advice

Apply to any company that is looking for your major. you may not be doing exactly what you want to be doing with any of the companies that hire you on but it is a good idea to keep an open mind to all future employees. sometimes your dream job comes from the company you expect the least.
