The ability to work remotely within the United States may be available based on business need. This option is not available in the states of California, Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, New York, Oregon or Washington at this time.
The Information Technology organization at FirstEnergy creates and maintains software solutions, and operates FirstEnergy data centers, service desks and voice/data networks.
As a participant in the Co-op/Intern Professional Development Program, you will be cultivating professional skills and performing professional level work at FirstEnergy. Each participant will receive on-the-job training, and challenging assignments to refine skills and round out competencies. Summer Internships with FirstEnergy are full-time opportunities spanning 13 weeks. FirstEnergy offers paid internships to qualified students actively enrolled in an accredited university or college.
Cyber Security Operations Analyst
The Security Operations Center (SOC) Intern – IT Security position supports security information and event monitoring functions utilizing FirstEnergy’s Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) tool. This role focuses primarily on monitoring the events and logs from FirstEnergy’s Information Technology and Cyber Security data feeds. This position requires ability to work independently as well as within groups. Sensitivity to accuracy, timeliness, and professionalism in all areas of support activity is imperative.
Examples of possible job duties and responsibilities of a Cyber Security Operations Analyst:
- Conduct production security monitoring for all information systems
- Monitor, analyze, and assist other SOC analysts with events and logs from firewalls, routers, and other network devices or hosts for potential incidents and threats
- Perform daily report reviews
- Communicate alerts as appropriate to SOC Analysts
- Document processes and procedures
- Maintain current knowledge of relevant technology as assigned
- Assist with metrics, reporting, and other SOC communications
- Process and share information with other FirstEnergy security teams
- Small projects, research, and data studies
- Work with confidential information
Applicant Requirements:
- Currently enrolled, full time, in a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university/college focusing on Computer Science, Cyber Security or other technology related disciplines.
- Class Standing – Senior (Graduating in Fall 2023 or Spring 2024) or Junior (Graduating in Fall 2024 or Spring 2025).
- Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
- Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future)

Preferred Skills/Experience
- Understanding of Information Security domains
- Prioritization and problem-solving skills
- Programming experience, specifically Python
- Familiarity with task automation and configuration management programs (i.e. PowerShell)
- Experience working with network traffic tools (i.e. Wireshark)
- Strong attention to detail
- Sound understanding of Microsoft Office line of products, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
