Freedom Summer Political Organizer - Ohio

Interested in becoming a stronger political activist and community organizer this summer? Want to join the national movement to raise the minimum wage? Looking to connect with other like-minded student organizers from around the country?

This summer, One Fair Wage, in partnership with the Food Labor Research Center at UC Berkeley and the UC Berkeley Public Service Center will be sponsoring Freedom Summer, a two-month community organizing training program in Ohio to provide students with real-life experience working in social movements and organizing with low-wage workers.

Students will learn from social movement leaders, elected officials, and celebrity activists. Freedom Summer interns will also receive training in social movements and organizing from experts in the field like One Fair Wage Executive Director Saru Jayaraman, then conduct real-life outreach and organizing work with low-wage workers. All students who complete the program will receive a Freedom Summer Certificate from One Fair Wage, demonstrating their knowledge of organizing and political activism.

Details:

Freedom Summer 2023 begins on June 1st and ends on July 28th, and takes place in Ohio (local students can choose between working in Cincinnati, Columbus, or Cleveland). Local students can choose between two options:
  • free housing in an Ohio student dorm with all meals provided free, OR
  • $15/hr + $1 per signature gathered (most of the work we're doing will be signature gathering)

Start dates before June 1st may be available, please follow up for more information!

Interns attend a class on Social Movements and Organizing once a week and will do 40-50 hours of organizing work per week, doing outreach with low-wage workers in an effort to raise wages. Interns receive guidance from both off-site mentors and professors who have years of social justice experience, as well as a supervisor at their site. Applications are due by March 31st.

We will be holding information sessions to share more about Freedom Summer - sign up here to receive more information about these info sessions.
