Assurance Intern

January - June 2018 • Boston, MA

What I liked

The opportunities to learn about assurance and ability to think on my feet and analyze financial statements for discrepancies with minimal help. I was able to create relevant work papers and review of client data. I got exposure to the technology, biotech, robotics, retail, and banking industries while working with clients.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the opportunity to g to client sites - but I didn’t have a car. I wish I got to work with a variety of people and network.

Advice

Go in positively and eager to learn. The work may be challenging sometimes but ask questions and seem engaged so that your supervisors know you are invested in the learning. Also, network with people even if you think you may not return to the company.

Assurance Intern

July - August 2020 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I enjoyed the opportunity to meet and network with so many people. I also liked the numerous opportunities I had to apply what I had learned in my classes at Assumption to real-world scenarios. The internship was more than just client work, I really enjoyed the professional development and skills training we had. I am grateful to be able to take so many new skills into my future career in public accounting.

What I wish was different

I wish we could have been in person, but of course, that was beyond my control. However, because the internship program was entirely virtual, all of the interns around the country were on one meeting call together. This gave me the opportunity to meet and network with so many more people than I would have if the internship was in person. I was extremely grateful to meet so many students my age from around the country.

Advice

Be flexible. If there is one thing I have learned in 2020 is that things can change at the drop of a hat. Always be open to new situations and don't get down on yourself if things don't work out. The ability to adapt to unforeseen changes is extremely valuable.

Tax Intern

January - April 2020 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

The ongoing experience I received at CBIZ enhanced my accounting knowledge every day. CBIZ company culture creates a learning experience on multiple levels. In house learning and also company module learning series provides the ultimate for accounting majors either in school or for continued CPA certification requirements. A helpful employee atmosphere inspired and nurtured my learning internship.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to receive school credit for this internship but was to late to receive it after the hiring process was completed. The experience I gained at CBIZ was immense however, I wish I could have done more but was prevented due to authority clearances.

Advice

Be prepared to learn fast.

Forensic Senior Associate

June - August 2023 • Tampa, FL

What I liked

I would say the only positive experience I had was the competitive salary compared to other firms.

What I wish was different

One of the most toxic work environments I have ever experienced. Director consistently made misogynistic remarks about employees and clients. Poor communication from managers. Was told during the interview process that I would have a flexible hybrid schedule and after I started, was in office Monday - Friday. Days I had to WFH, I was reprimanded for. Definitely felt like I was being parented rather than having a mentor. Once I told HR about my experience and how the staff was being treated, I was discharged the next day - Huge red flag. Best comparison I can relate the office environment to is the Stanford Prison Experiment.

Advice

0/10 - Don't recommend

Audit Intern

January - May 2019 • Jenkintown, PA

What I liked

I thought it was interesting learning about the different clients and what they did. One of the clients we traveled to was in Maryland and what the company did was make distinct kinds of seafood that we all got to try a day for lunch. Also, the Senior Auditors and Staff Auditors really were helpful and always answered my questions when I had one about different Auditing topics. Also, the Managers always sat down providing great one on one time and gave great advice on how you could improve on your work.

What I wish was different

I did not get a cubical and the laptop they had me use was not very up to date. They definitely need to upgrade their technology and along with that provide more comfortable working spaces for their interns.

Advice

This internship along with any other internship just do not be afraid to ask questions. If you do not ask questions, you are going to struggle learning. Believe me, the workers know that you do not know what you are doing and that it will take time to get good at the job. Go in with a positive attitude and always go above and beyond and trust me you will get noticed. I promise you that!

Forensic Accounting Intern

April - August 2021 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

The people I worked with were fun and intelligent. They care about you and treat you like one of them even though you're an intern.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a supervisor that I could check in with from time to time to talk about my progress in the assignments that i am doing instead of just a survey. There is a survey every 20 days or so but no one really got back to me even when I requested to be contacted.

Advice

In this internship you would learn a lot about tools used in the business world like excel and other software. It was a good learning experience.
