NMG Aerospace

Design Engineer Co-op

January - May 2024 • Stow, OH

What I liked

I enjoyed the people that I worked with at NMG. It was a great group of people that made me feel very welcome from day one. They helped me along the way and showed me the best ways to complete my tasks. As a design engineer co-op, I was expected to aid the other design engineers by creating objects such as fixtures that would help us test the products. I also took part in various other tasks such as reverse engineering a military product and even welding.

What I wish was different

There were certain points where I felt like I could have used more work. I wish I could have been more hands-on with things such as testing the products. I felt that it was a lot more desk heavy than actually working alongside the other engineers. I would have liked to have seen more sides of what actually goes on in the engineering world.

Advice

If I had the chance to do it over again I definitely would. My advice would be to speak up and ask everyone if they need your help when you feel that you do not have anything to do. I would also say to make sure you are socializing with your coworkers so that you get to know one another. Working is much more fun with friends than with strangers!

What I liked

The atmosphere was great with other co-workers. Everyone wants you to succeed at NMG, and you contribute to real projects they have going on.

What I wish was different

It might just be Manufacturing in general, but I wasn’t a fan of the type of work it is. Not a fan of document revisions, time studies, process improvements, those sort of things.

Advice

Be open to new projects and ready to go whenever you’re asked to do something.

What I wish was different

I wish I could see the final products being applied to their higher level. All our products go on functional aircraft, so that would be awesome to see.

Advice

Always ask questions, and be open to learn.

Product Engineer Co-op

May - July 2022 • Hudson, OH

What I liked

As a Product Engineer Co-op at NMG Aerospace in my second work term, one of my favorite aspects of my experience was the responsibility I gained at the company. I experienced having a couple projects for which I was solely responsible for. This gave me the opportunity to use my problem solving skills in a way that directly brought value to the company. I also enjoyed experiencing the manufacturing process by working on the shop floor. I gained a new perspective on designing for manufacturability which will stick with me as I progress in my career.

What I wish was different

The biggest issue I experienced over the course of this term was an issue in communication. On a couple instances, I was assigned a project or task and would not be given a deadline. I would only learn of a deadline when a superior would approach me asking me if I had finished the work yet. To resolve these communication issues moving forward, I made sure to clarify a deadline immediately after the work was assigned to me. As I had mentioned in my review following my past term, I also wish that I was assigned a mentor to work with over the course of the term rather than being largely unguided.

Advice

At the end of my previous term at NMG Aerospace in this position, I recommended that anyone looking to fill this role should actively seek out work and ask many questions to keep their workload up. Over the course of this term, I have realized that the nature of the aerospace industry means that the workload as a product engineer at this company can fluctuate greatly. Therefore, I recommend that as a Product Engineer Co-op, one is patient through the periods of light workload. I would also recommend taking these periods of lighter workload to gain experience in other parts of the company such as process engineering, quality engineering, or production. NMG does an amazing job of providing opportunities to experience other parts of the company if one expresses interest.

Product Engineer Co-op

January - May 2022 • Hudson, OH

What I liked

As a Product Engineer Co-op at NMG Aerospace, one of my favorite aspects of my experience was gaining cross-functional experience. I experienced not only product design, but also some of manufacturing, quality, operations, and supply chain. I also enjoyed being able to experience many different roles a Product Engineer may perform in a company. These roles include product testing, drafting, prototyping, and product design. I also enjoyed the friendly, small company feel.

What I wish was different

I wish that co-ops at NMG were granted a higher pay rate to make life in the Stow area more affordable if from outside the area. Also, I wish that I was assigned a mentor to work with over the course of the term rather than being so unsupervised. I often had nothing I could work on because the senior engineers were too busy to offer mentorship. It also would help to have an assigned mentor to take questions to first. Lastly, I wish I could have received official training and certification in GD&T, Six Sigma, and LEAN Manufacturing.

Advice

If you are going to be a Product Engineer Co-op at NMG Aerospace, I recommend you always ask questions and actively seek out work even when it is not assigned. It can be easy to keep questions to yourself if the other engineers seem busy. It can also be easy to get bored when work isn't consistently being assigned to you. I recommend you constantly seek out advice and work to be done if you wish to gain the most that this amazing experience has to offer.

What I liked

NMG has some of the nicest and most understanding people I've ever worked with. I never felt personally attacked or threatened by anybody, and I feel that everyone was working together to achieve a common goal, without malice for the company that they were working for.

What I wish was different

I only wish that I had more work to do. There wasn't a lot of work for co-ops to do and I wanted to get put to better use.
