UX Writer Intern

June - August 2023 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

I went into this internship without any experience in UX writing, and came out on the other side deciding it would be the career path I want to pursue. As an intern, I had a supportive team whom I could get feedback and advice from, and who were endlessly patient with me as I learned and grew. My mentor also helped me every step of the way, whether it was with an assignment, my assigned summer project, understanding and practicing UX writing and content design, or rebuilding my portfolio at the end of the internship. An internship at Rocket is the ideal place to explore potential career paths, develop new skills, and connect with people who care about you, your personal goals, and your future. I could not have asked for a better internship!

What I wish was different

The majority of the social events for interns happen on-site, so it can be difficult to meet other interns if you are working remotely. I wish there had been more virtual meet-ups for remote interns, since there was only one toward the end of the internship. The internship was still very fulfilling as a remote intern, but I would recommend working hybrid or on-site to get the most out of it.

Advice

Don't be afraid to apply to a Rocket internship. I almost didn't apply because I had never done UX writing or content design before and believed I wouldn't qualify, but I was wrong. I encourage you to apply if you have any related experience in the field of the internship of your choice. The teams at Rocket want you to develop new skills and grow, and will be patient and help you throughout the learning process.

BI Engineer Intern

May - August 2017 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

Work hours had flexibility, they cared about your success and NEVER minded if you asked a question, no matter how small it feels. I learned how to write TSQL from the ground up, and by the end was building entire reports for hundreds of clients at a time.

What I wish was different

I wish there were one or two less of the intern events. Some were fun, however some felt redundant.

Advice

Talk to as many people as you can. The more people you talk to, the more you can learn about the business, and the better you perform and learn.

Escrow Accounting Intern

June - August 2020 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

The company made a lot of effort to ensure the virtual experience went smoothly for interns

What I wish was different

I wish I hadn’t been the only intern on my team so I had more people my age to collaborate with

Advice

If you’re working a virtual internship, make sure you take time to step away from your computer during the day so you don’t overwork yourself

You had the opportunity to work with really smart engineers who were really skilled in certain areas. If you needed help, someone could definitely help you and there is a lot of room to grow to diversify your skillet at QL.

What I wish was different

Advice

Quicken loans might seem like a financial company, but really it is one of the best places to work for tech and I recommend for an internship.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

The culture is phenomenal at Quicken Loans. Everybody treats you like a real team member, not like an intern.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been in person, that's probably the thing that comes to mind first.

Advice

Reach out to anybody, anytime. Every single person, and I mean every single person is willing to chat, or let you shadow them, or anything.

Intern

May - August 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I loved how the internship allowed you to truly see what a career at Quicken is like. Also, super flexible. The company allows you to see what other roles within the site are like even if it’s outside the scope of your internship.

What I wish was different

I wish we were better prepared as far as expectations for the SAFE exam. We didn’t really know what to expect as far as how much studying and the level of difficulty that went into the exam. I also found ourselves to be bored every so often, so I wish our directors had more tasks or things for us to do that allowed us to expand our knowledge or get to know the company more.

Advice

The SAFE exam is no joke so be prepared! However, if you pass, it’s extremely rewarding & you’ll increase the likelihood of receiving an offer following the internship tremendously.

Strategy and Analytics Intern

April - September 2019 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

I gained very valuable experience working in an area that was directly related to my major and minor (Finance and Business Analytics). I also enjoyed working downtown Detroit where there are always things to do. The experience and overall environment at Quicken was amazing and led me to accepting a full time position that I work in currently.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have spent more time during my internship shadowing the different areas of business and learning more about the whole company rather than being so focused on my particular area. With a company as large as Quicken there are so many different areas to explore and it is important to branch out and see what business area might suit you best.

Advice

Definitely shadow as many different positions as possible and expand your network of contacts you can reach out to when you are eventually looking for a full time position. Also be sure to ask a lot of questions and take notes!

Intern

January - March 2015 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

Fun environment, they took us on tours of Detroit and different events

What I wish was different

I didn’t get a choice in what my internship focused on.

Advice

It’s so much fun and they really try to sell you the idea, they didn’t put me with a strong leader and I felt like I wasn’t making a big impact.

Data Analyst Intern

December 2018 - August 2019 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

QL company culture is amazing. The intern events during the summer were a lot of fun and great neyworking opportunities. You can learn alot about how to work in interdependent teams.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been smaller intern opportunities during the winter/fall. The big ones in the summer are definitely fun, but with so many people there, it can be harder to get to know your coworkers if you're not an extrovert.

Advice

Be very open to doing work that doesn't align with your degree. Shadow as many folk as possible. Don't be afraid to make the ask for an extension or an opportunity on another team.

Nothing, it was everything I wanted out of an internship and they offered me a position when it was over.

Make sure you are willing to put in the time and work necessary for the position.

I liked that they really wanted you to learn and always pushed you to do what best fir your skill set. They offered several networking opportunities of which you could and could not have taken advantage of. The culture is amazing as you can start your career here with great people that care about their work and getting the best output.

What I wish was different

The shuttle system for you to get to your work building would sometimes keep you waiting all day.

Advice

Get to know everyone you can! Having connections within this company will take you very far in your early career here and later down the roapd other places (if applicable)

Marketing Operations Intern

May - August 2019 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

QL puts on an AMAZING summer intern experience. Everyone loves the interns and treats them like they're team members and that they matter, not just interns. I had the opportunity to live in the city on Wayne's campus through QL and it was so much fun working and living in the city. It is a wonderful opportunity and opened huge doors for me!

What I wish was different

I wish that my team leader had been a little better at guiding me since most of the time I was making up the things I was working on myself. It was a real taste of the business world though!

Advice

Take on EVERY opportunity! Do not pass up anything. Come up with your own ideas and don't wait around to be told what to do. Talk to and network with as many people as possible. Ask TONS of questions and don't worry if people think your question is dumb. This is YOUR future we're talking about, so make the most of it!
